Mandatory reporting: ‘A policy without reason’.

This viewpoint explores the recommendation to introduce mandatory reporting from recent report into case of Malachi Subecz, a child who was killed by his caregiver. I argue that this policy would have unintended consequences. It is likely flood system with low risk cases, which could make identification high cases more difficult. reduces focus on prevention; intensifies resources and power within Oranga Tamariki; does not take account either complexity issues causing abuse harm, nor their widespread nature. also exacerbate inequities for Māori, as bias impact reports. Currently, people may due lack clarity around type severity they should report, limited or inadequate responses previous reports made, because are unable recognise signs unwilling act them. Instead, we keep strong prevention devolution, while urgently generating clear consensus between Tamariki key reporters about when, why, how what outcomes be. Alternative recommendations suggested.
